Sonja Swan is a South African sculptor and environmental architect whose practice explores the interconnectedness of ecological systems and the urgent need for reconnection with the natural world. Working primarily in clay, Swan creates sculptural forms that draw from organic structures, reflecting on the relationships between species, habitats, and human intervention. Her work is materially and conceptually grounded in environmental concern, addressing themes such as industrialised agriculture, extinction, and ecological imbalance. Through carefully balanced, often modular forms, she emphasises interdependence and collective structure. The monochromatic surfaces foreground line, light, and shadow, while reflective finishes implicate the viewer within the work’s ethical frame. Swan’s practice operates as an ongoing inquiry into fragility, resilience, and the conditions necessary for inspiring acts of restoration.
