Clive Sithole

B. 1971

Born in Johannesburg, Clive Sithole has forged a practice rooted in Zulu ceramic tradition and shaped by wide-ranging exchange – from learning with master potters across South Africa to working with Magdalene Odundo in the UK. His work is held in collections including the Eskenazi Museum of Art in Indiana and the North Carolina Museum of Art.

Widely regarded as the first male Zulu ceramic artist to dedicate himself fully to a field historically reserved for women, Sithole shifts, rather than abandons, tradition. His burnished and incised vessels draw from historical izinkamba beer wares of KwaZulu-Natal, yet pulse with cattle, queens, horns, and remembered landscapes.

"Clive Sithole's clay is alive. One pot is a queen, another is the crest of the morning, nascent light and swaddling fog through which the forms of cattle emerge in terra sigillata relief carvings."
